Now you will get the details of every doctor in the country with just one click. Actually, the National Medical Register portal has been started, which will have a complete database of all allopathic doctors (MBBS) registered in the country. This important step has been taken by the Ministry of Health to strengthen the National Health Register digital healthcare ecosystem, which was launched by Union Health Minister JP Nadda. He said that under this, work has been started towards starting a similar register for paramedics and other health professionals. At the same time, under Section 31 of the National Medical Commission (NMC) Act, 2019, the NMC has been given the right to create a national register, which includes the name, address and all recognized qualifications of each licensed doctor.
State Medical Council will be responsible
Regarding the role of Medical Councils (SMCs), JP Nadda said that State Medical Councils are important stakeholders in the development and maintenance of the National Medical Register and help in facilitating the registration process. He directed all SMCs (State Medical Councils) to play their active role and expedite the registration process. It was also mentioned in the meeting that the need for NMR has been felt for a long time.
Why is NMR necessary?
NMR is very important because authentic data of doctors across the country is very important. Till now there was no proper database of doctors’ data, whose information will now be ensured by the NMR portal. The easy registration process will ensure that authentic data will be maintained easily. This authentic information is very important because India wants to create a huge digital health ecosystem and the creation of a digital register of doctors will be very important for this.
Every detail of doctors will be available on the portal
After the order of the Health Minister, Union Health Secretary Aparva Chandra said, ‘Till now there was no comprehensive data which had detailed information about the total number of doctors in the country, doctors who left the country, doctors who lost their license or doctors who lost their lives. With the launch of NMR, data of more than 13 lakh doctors will be available at one place. NMR will be a part of the Healthcare Professional Register under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission and it will have details of all medical professionals.
