The central government had come up with the Jan Dhan Yojana to provide the benefit of banking services to every poor person in the country. This scheme is completing 10 years. In such a situation, the completion of a decade of the Prime Minister Jan Dhan Yojana is being celebrated. The central government launched this scheme on 28 August 2014. Through the PM Jan Dhan Yojana, the government has been successful in connecting the poor and deprived sections of the country to the banking system. Along with this, the benefits of social security schemes are also being directly delivered to the beneficiaries through Direct Bank Transfer (DBT).

Why was the Jan Dhan Yojana introduced?

The aim of the Modi government to bring PM Jan Dhan Yojana was to economically empower the people and connect the poor class with the banking sector. People who did not have access to banking services can avail banking facilities through this. There is no need to spend even a single rupee to open an account under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana and there is no need to maintain a minimum balance in it. Any person can open an account in it with just zero balance. A free RuPay debit card is issued to the account holder.

More than 50 crore accounts opened

According to the Finance Ministry data, more than 50 crore Jan Dhan accounts have been opened under this scheme so far. Under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, all beneficiaries get accident insurance cover of up to Rs 2 lakh (Rs 1 lakh for accounts opened before 28.08.2018). Under this scheme, a life cover of Rs 30,000 and interest on the deposited amount is also available. Apart from this, if the minimum balance is maintained in the Jan Dhan account, then an overdraft facility of Rs 10,000 is also available. (IANS)
