Major Muslim organization Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind condemned Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s statement regarding ‘Miyan Muslim’ and said on Saturday that Chief Justice (CJI) Justice DY Chandrachud should take suo motu cognizance of this divisive and anti-constitutional remark. Sarma had said in the state assembly last Tuesday that he would be biased and would not allow ‘Miyan Muslims’ to take over Assam.
Assam Chief Minister Sarma was speaking in the Assembly in connection with an adjournment motion moved by opposition parties on the law and order situation in the state in the backdrop of the gangrape and murder of a 14-year-old girl in Nagaon. Jamiat President Maulana Mahmood Madani said in a statement, “The Chief Minister’s statements are not only inappropriate but also a betrayal of constitutional and moral principles.”
Madani has also sent a written letter to Chief Justice of India Justice DY Chandrachud, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP President JP Nadda, attaching a list of the Assam Chief Minister’s frequent unconstitutional statements and demanding immediate action from him. He has also urged the Chief Justice to take suo motu cognizance of this. Madani also claimed that the Chief Minister is trying to humiliate a linguistic and religious minority by calling them Miyan and trying to make them second class citizens.
The leave given for namaz in the assembly has also ended
At the same time, the Assam Assembly will end the two-hour break given to Muslim MLAs to offer namaz on Fridays. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma gave this information. An assembly official said that this rule will be implemented from the next session. In a post on the social media platform X, Sarma said, “By eliminating the two-hour Jumma break, the Assam Assembly has prioritized productivity and ended another mark of colonial burden. This practice was started by Syed Sadulla of the Muslim League in 1937.” Sarma said, “Thanks to Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary and our MLAs for this historic decision.” The official said that the last time this two-hour break was given was on Friday, which was the last day of the autumn session of the Assembly.
