IIT student found dead in Guwahati hostel, this is the fourth such death this year; students’ anger erupts

A student was found dead in the hostel of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Guwahati on Monday. Police said that the body found in a room of Brahmaputra hostel was of a third year student of computer science. Officials said that the boy was a resident of Uttar Pradesh. At present, the investigation is going on and the body has been sent for post-mortem. It is known that this year this is the fourth incident of death of a student in Guwahati IIT. On August 9, the body of a girl student was found hanging from a noose in her room.

A spokesperson for the institute said, “IIT Guwahati is deeply saddened to inform that a student from our community has passed away. We offer our heartfelt condolences to the student’s family, friends and loved ones in this difficult time.” He said that the welfare of students is IIT’s top priority. It is committed to providing support and resources to help students overcome the challenges they face.

Angry students started protesting

The spokesperson said, ‘We encourage our student community to contact our support system. Guwahati IIT reaffirms its commitment to promoting a supportive and safe environment for all students.’ However, the students are furious over this death. They have started protesting against the incident. These people are questioning the effectiveness of the mental health and wellness support systems of the institute. They say that there is a need to bring about large-scale changes in the system.
