The research involved 2,523 people over the age of 30. They assessed the participants’ eating habits and health, to understand the extent to which regular consumption of potatoes could adversely affect cardiometabolic health in healthy humans. What the research found? This research found that there was no harm in eating four or more cups of white potatoes or sweet potatoes – whether fried or un-fried. It also had no direct relation to health problems like high blood pressure and dyslipidemia. In addition, participants who ate fried potatoes had a lower risk of contracting various health problems. However, it was found when they ate it instead of red meat and also remained physically active. By doing so they were also 24% less likely to develop type 2 diabetes and 26% less likely to have elevated triglycerides.

How was the research done? In this research published in September 2022, the researchers actually started collecting data from about 70% of the participants in 1971 and continued in subsequent years. The study has seen how many and what types of potatoes people ate. For example, white potatoes and sweet potatoes. It was found that people ate 36% baked potatoes, 28% fried potatoes, 14% mashed potatoes and 9% boiled.
