Dara Singh gave up non-veg during the shooting of ‘Ramayana’, son Vindu told many stories

Dara Singh: Long before ‘The Great Khali’ and ‘Jinder Mahal’ became big names in wrestling today, another name representing the country was ‘Dara Singh’. After leaving sports, Dara Singh stepped into Bollywood. With his muscular body and handsome looks, he earned the title of the first ‘He-Man’ of Indian cinema with his action sequences. Though Dara had done many films and TV shows in his career, it was his character as Lord Hanuman in Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayana that stole millions of hearts. When Dara Singh was cast for the role of ‘Hanuman’ in Ramanand Sagar’s ‘Ramayana’, he was 60 years old. His character of ‘Hanuman’ played in ‘Ramayana’ won the hearts of the audience. He became so famous from this show that people started worshiping him as ‘Hanuman’. Not only this, his photographs in the form of ‘Hanuman’ were being displayed in temples. In an interview, Dara Singh’s son Vindu Dara Singh revealed how his father had made many changes in his personal life to play Hanuman.

It is said that Dara Singh was forced into child marriage with Bachno Kaur who was a much older woman than him. However, he later divorced her and married Surjeet Kaur in 1961. They have a son Vindu Dara Singh. During an interview with Koimoi, son Vindu Dara Singh had told that his father had stopped eating non-veg while playing the role of Hanuman in Ramayana. Bindu said,When my father was shooting for the character of Hanuman, during that time he stopped eating non-vegetarian food. After having breakfast, he used to prepare for his character for an hour. Ramayana’s dialogues used to mumble in sleep
Vindu had also mentioned during the interview that even after the shooting of Ramayana, his father did not remove the make-up for the whole day. He had said that Dara Singh used to mutter dialogues even in his sleep and it was his mother, Surjit, who used to wake him up to remind him that he was not on the shooting floor.

Was earlier refused to play the role of Hanuman
Did you know that Dara Singh was the first to refuse to play the iconic character of Hanuman? The actor refused to do so because he believed that his body was not right to play the role of Mahavir Bajrangbali. Also, in a conversation with a YouTube channel, Aaj Aur Kal, Dara Singh recalled that even after he declined several times, director Ramanand Sagar was adamant on casting him. Dara Singh said, , Mr. Sagar, playing the role of hanuman This Age is not. Now my body is not as healthy and shapely as it should be to play the role of Bajrangbali. He told me, ‘I will test you and I am sure you will still give your best.’ I played that role and it became such a huge hit. None of us expected it to be so successful.”

Dara Singh was last seen playing the role of Kareena Kapoor’s grandfather in the film ‘Jab We Met’. Wrestler-actor-politician Dara Singh died on 12 July 2012 due to a heart attack.
