Born on 13 January 1930 in Kapurthala, Punjab, Sardar Malik did his schooling from Uttarakhand. During his studies here, Sardar Malik took dance training from Uday Shankar India Cultural Center in Almora. Sardar Malik achieved mastery in folk dances like Kathakali, Bharatanatyam and Manipuri. Along with dance, Sardar Malik received music training from Ustad Allauddin Khan. After this, in the 40s, he came to Mumbai with the dream of earning a name in the film world.

Sardar Malik, who composed more than 600 songs in his career, was Guru Dutt’s roommate in Mumbai. In search of his place in Mumbai, Sardar kept going around the studios and his hard work paid off. Sardar got a chance to choreograph the 1945 film Chalis Crore Nanabai Bhatt. Meanwhile, film director Ramesh Sehgal recognized Sardar Malik’s musical talent and offered him to compose music for the 1947 film Renuka. The music of this film was well received and offers kept coming. Sardar Malik gave music in many films like Chor Bazar, Abe Hayat, Mera Ghar Mere Bachche, Sargana Pick Pocket Satshree Akal and Nigahen. Out of which the music of films like Sargana, Abe Hayat, Pick Pocket and International Gorilla was a huge hit.

Meanwhile, Sahir wrote songs in a film and Lata Mangeshkar was giving voice to these songs. The songs were composed by Sardar Malik. When the recording of the song was being done in the studio, Lata Mangeshkar was getting stuck many times in the line of a song. After which Lata Mangeshkar asked Sahir to change this line. But Sahir refused, after which there was tension between the two. Lata Mangeshkar left the studio. Along with this, Lata Mangeshkar also got angry with Sardar Malik because he did not support Lata. Later Sardar Malik stopped getting work and the doors of the studio started closing. Sardar could not get the job even after several attempts.
