Thousands of students of these classes left their studies from central universities in the middle of 5 years.

Over 19,000 students belonging to Other Backward Classes (OBCs), Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) dropped out from all Central Universities, Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) since 2018. Gave. Union Minister of State for Education Subhash Sarkar gave this information in response to a written question in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. Member of Parliament Tiruchi Siva, representing Tamil Nadu, asked the government about the number of SC, ST and OBC students who passed out from IITs, IIMs and other central universities in the last five years. She also wanted to know “whether the government has conducted any study regarding the reasons for the high dropout rate of OBC, SC and ST students in these higher educational institutions”.

To Shiva’s question, the government said that 6,901 OBC students, 3,596 SC and 3,949 ST students were expelled from central universities from 2018 to 2023. That is, he has left his studies in the middle. Similarly, 2544 OBC students, 1362 SC and 538 ST students left the IIT studies midway. Additionally, 133 OBC, 143 SC and 90 ST students dropped out from prestigious institutes like IIMs in the last five years.

However, many steps were taken by the government like fee reduction, establishment of more institutes, scholarship, giving priority to national level scholarship to help students with economic background to pursue education. Several other measures have also been taken for the welfare of SC/ST students including ‘waiving off tuition fees in IITs’.
