UGC prepares curriculum framework and guidelines for environmental education at graduation level, see details
Work will be done in the direction of saving natural resources from pollution, climate change, eco system. With this objective, UGC has issued these draft guidelines. The problem of ecosystem, biodiversity, pollution has been included in the course. What are the types of pollution and what are the necessary steps to deal with it. What role can the students play? How climate change is affecting all of us has also been added. Students will also be taught about case studies of national and international level. The course will carry a total of four credits.
The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 recommends making environmental education an integral part of the curriculum, says the UGC chairman. The importance of promoting environmental awareness and sensitivity towards environmental protection and sustainable development has also been linked to this endeavour. The New Education Policy also advocates holistic and multidisciplinary education through flexible and innovative curriculum for all higher education institutions, including credit-based courses and projects in the areas of community engagement and service, environmental education and value-based education. On October 20, 2022, the Prime Minister launched Mission Life, a global movement to safeguard our environment from the effects of climate change. A need has been felt to include areas such as climate change, pollution, waste management, sanitation, forest and wildlife conservation, and sustainable development in environmental education. Earlier in 2003, the UGC had prepared a core module syllabus for the mandatory implementation of Environmental Studies at the undergraduate level as per the directions of the Supreme Court.
