From ‘Sholay’ to ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’, there are many such films in Hindi cinema which have been discussed for decades. These films made many records at the box office and even today the stories of these films hold a place in the hearts of the audience. But, do you know about the first film of Hindi cinema with which the concept of blockbuster started. This film was released before the country got independence, which was a golden jubilee and this film also changed the direction of Dada Muni i.e. Ashok Kumar’s career. We are talking about the film ‘Kismat’, which became the first Indian film to earn 1 crore. The film did this feat at a time when it was difficult for a film to earn even 20-30 lakhs.

great earning of luck

A new trend started in Hindi cinema with Ashok Kumar starrer ‘Kismet’. This film was released in 1943 and stars like Mumtaz Shanti and Shah Nawaz were seen in it along with Ashok Kumar. If we talk about this film, then it was very bold for its time. The film shows the story of an unmarried girl, who becomes pregnant without marriage. This film started the trend of anti-hero in Hindi cinema. 2 lakhs were spent in making this film at that time and it collected 1.6 crores worldwide.

Ashok Kumar was an emerging actor of the 1940s

This film made Ashok Kumar a superstar. In the 1940s, Ashok Kumar was emerging as a young actor. Then in 1943, luckily he got ‘Kismat’ and this film changed his career. The film took him to the top of Hindi cinema and Ashok Kumar became India’s first superstar. But, as soon as the era of Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor started, the tag of superstar was snatched away from his name.

The rain had broken the record of luck

The special thing is that for about 7 years, no film could break the record of Ashok Kumar’s ‘Kismat’ in terms of earnings. That is, it remained the highest grossing film of Hindi cinema for a long time. However, the Tamil film ‘Chandralekha’ released in 1948 gave it a tough competition, but could not break the record of Kismat. Finally, Raj Kapoor’s ‘Barsaat’ released in 1949 broke the record of Kismat and collected close to 2 crores at the box office.
