When SJ Surya took over the director’s position with Kollywood star Ajith Kumar’s superhit film ‘Vaali’ in 1999, no one had thought that this film would run for 270 days in South theaters. SJ Surya, whose real name is Justin Slevaraj Pandian. Today, SJ Surya has become a famous actor in the South Indian film industry. He is an Indian film director, screenwriter, actor, music composer and producer who has worked in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi films. He started his career as a director with ‘Vasanth and Sabhapathi’. After deciding to pursue his passion for acting, Surya moved to Chennai and worked hard to make a place in the Tamil film industry. He took up a job in a hotel to support himself financially. During this time, he was spotted by filmmaker K. Bhagyaraj. The actor then worked as an assistant director under Vasanth for ‘Aasai’ (1995) and under Sabapathy for ‘Sundar Purushan’ (1996). Surya also first appeared in uncredited roles in films like Kizhakku Cheemayile (1993).

In 1999, Surya’s journey from assistant director to director began. He debuted as a filmmaker with ‘Vaali’. This romantic thriller featured Ajith Kumar, Simran and Jyothika in the lead roles. ‘Vaali’ proved to be a box office hit. Apart from this, Surya directed films like ‘Kushi’ (2000) which was a romantic comedy film starring Thalapathy Vijay and Jyothika. The film became a blockbuster and was remade in Hindi, Telugu and Kannada. Interestingly, Surya also directed the Hindi and Telugu versions of the film. Finally, in 2004, Surya debuted as an actor in his third directorial venture titled ‘New’ (2004). The same year he directed the Telugu dub of Mahesh Babu and Ameesha Patel’s film ‘Nani’.

Also, in March 2006, the Censor Board filed a complaint against Surya for using stills from scenes that had been deleted from the film. After being arrested for the second time, he was again released.
