Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is the leading cause of death throughout the world. It is also one of the prevalent health problems across the world. Due to poor lifestyle and diet, most people are increasingly becoming victims of severe myocardial ischemia. According to a research by Kass and Sievert, the main causes of coronary heart disease are smoking, high blood pressure and hyperlipidemia. This is somewhat consistent with our findings, but the order of risk factors varies considerably. The most common risk factor in our study is hypertension (71.8%), which is not statistically significantly different from other risk factors depending on the season. According to Dr. Kedar Kulkarni, other risk factors that are present but less common in our sample include smoking, hyperlipidemia, family history and finally diabetes mellitus.
During winter, the incidence of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) was highest in December, while the lowest incidence was in March. ACS was more common in older patients during the autumn/winter season, when they had a lower socio-epidemiological situation and, as a consequence, a different dietary regimen. Age was the only factor that significantly influenced the incidence of ACS, but not gender.
Seasonal differences in ACS complications and outcomes were also statistically significant (p=0.048); Postinfarction angina pectoris was more common in the spring/summer season and heart failure (Killip III and IV) was more common in the autumn/winter season. Compared to the spring/summer season, a higher frequency of fatal ACS cases was observed in the autumn/winter season (p=0.001). The results obtained point to the seasonal influence of weather patterns on the phenomenon.
Data to date suggest that seasonal meteorological conditions influence the incidence, complications, and outcomes of ACS. As a result, patients should make changes to their lifestyle, especially in winter, by eating a diet rich in organic sulphates and vitamin D3, and they should spend as much time in the sun as possible.
