The next hearing of the case of rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital is going on in the Supreme Court today. A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud along with Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra is hearing the case. During this, Kapil Sibal has submitted a sealed envelope to the Supreme Court on behalf of the state of West Bengal. It allegedly contains details of the current situation. According to the information, in this report submitted to the Supreme Court, it has been told that 23 people lost their lives during the doctors’ strike in protest against the incident.
The Supreme Court had taken suo motu cognizance of the matter
Earlier, the first hearing of this case was held on 22 August when the court took suo motu cognizance of the matter. In the last hearing, the Supreme Court had constituted a national task force to consider issues related to the safety of doctors, especially women. The apex court had directed CISF to tighten security in hospitals. At the same time, the court had also asked the CBI as well as the Bengal government to submit a report on the investigation of mob violence and vandalism during the protest at RG Kar Hospital on August 15.
People took to the streets after completion of one month
Meanwhile, Indian expatriates organised protests in 130 cities across 25 countries on Sunday. During this, justice was demanded for the trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital. At the same time, thousands of people took to the streets in Kolkata at midnight on the completion of one month of this horrific incident that took place on 9 August. The protesters formed a human chain and demanded justice for the victim in the third ‘Reclaim the Night’ protest march. During this, a protester told news agency ANI, “The Chief Minister of Bengal is of no use. She is only worried about saving her chair. If we do not get justice, we will hold a bigger protest.”
CBI will present the report on September 17
The victim’s parents have recently said that they were offered bribes by the Kolkata Police to hide the hasty cremation of their daughter. The case is currently being investigated by the CBI, which will submit its report to the Calcutta High Court on September 17.
