6 districts of Kerala should be alert, IMD issued yellow alert – Hindustan News Hub

Once again an alert has been issued in Kerala regarding rain and storm. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘yellow alert’ for 6 districts of Kerala on Monday as moderate rain continues across the state. According to the district rainfall forecast released by the Meteorological Department on Sunday, ‘Yellow Alert’ has been issued for Thiruvananthapuram, Idukki, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad districts on Monday.

The Meteorological Department uses four colors to issue weather alerts in the country. These colors and their messages are…Green (no action required), Yellow (keep an eye and monitor), Orange (be prepared) and Red (action/assistance required). The weather department has also predicted light to moderate rainfall of five to 15 mm per hour and strong winds with speed up to 40 km per hour in parts of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha and Kottayam districts.

Fishermen advised not to go near the sea

In view of the possibility of heavy rain in these districts of Kerala, the Wayanad district administration has also advised people to be cautious. Wayanad District Administration has instructed people living in landslide prone areas to be extra cautious. Apart from this, IMD said that fishermen have been advised not to go into the sea off the Kerala-Lakshadweep coast till October 10. According to the Meteorological Department, there is a possibility of storm with thunder and strong winds in Kerala.

Where and how much rain occurred?

According to IMD data, heavy rain occurred in many parts of the state till 5.30 pm on Sunday evening. Observatories recorded 93 mm rainfall at Kannur airport, followed by 28 mm rainfall at Palakkad, 13 mm rainfall at Karipur airport, 7 mm each at Alappuzha and Kannur and 5 mm rainfall at Punalur.

Automatic weather stations (AWS) and automatic rain gauges (ARGs) recorded 71 mm rainfall at Anakkayam (Malappuram district), 64 mm at Panniyur (Kannur district) and 62.5 mm at Panathur (Kasaragod district). Udumbannur in Idukki district recorded 50.5 mm rainfall, while Nilambur, Palemad and Munderi in Malappuram district recorded 35.5 mm, 23 mm and 20 mm rainfall respectively. Peringome (Kannur district) received 22.5 mm rainfall and Karapuzha (Wayanad district) received 21 mm rainfall. (with language inputs)
