On this day, Chief Justice H.J. Six judges of the federal court, led by Kania, had gathered for the first sitting of the Supreme Court of India. At the event, the country’s current Chief Justice DY Chandrachud said, “Attention should be paid to the structural issues affecting the judiciary such as pending cases, outdated procedures and culture of adjournment.” “The legal profession must emerge from a culture of adjournment to a culture of professionalism,” CJI Chandrachud said at the inauguration of the Supreme Court’s Diamond Jubilee Year.
‘We need to recognize the challenges and start difficult conversations’
Justice Chandrachud said, “Our ability to remain relevant as an institution requires us to recognize the challenges and initiate difficult conversations. Extension of oral arguments does not continue to delay judicial outcomes.” CJI Chandrachud said the Supreme Court was established with a spirit of idealism that it would interpret laws in accordance with the rule of law and not colonial values ​​or social hierarchies.
People’s trust remains on the Supreme Court – CJI
Describing the Supreme Court as an institution of solution and justice, the CJI said that the large number of people coming to the judiciary shows its strong role against injustice, oppression and arbitrariness. The Supreme Court, through its judgments, has enhanced the rights of citizens by weakening the norms of locus standi and recognizing a set of new rights under Article 21 of the Constitution.
Women can now be seen in important positions in the country – CJI
CJI Chandrachud also said that women can now be seen in important positions in the country. India is going through a period of ‘social and demographic change’. Women, traditionally under-represented in the legal profession, now constitute 36.3 per cent of the district judiciary’s working force. The CJI said that the upgraded e-filing platform launched in May 2023 has made the filing of cases 24×7 simple, fast and convenient. With a continuous increase in the share of e-filing as compared to physical filing, about 1 lakh 28 thousand e-filings have been done so far.
