Accused of misbehaving with an army officer and sexually harassing his fiancée; 5 policemen suspended

The fiancée of an Army officer, arrested for allegedly misbehaving with the police in Bhubaneswar, on Thursday claimed that she was sexually assaulted after being taken into custody. Taking strict action, Odisha Police has suspended five accused policemen.

Arrested for allegedly misbehaving with the police in Bhubaneswar, the fiancée of the army officer on Thursday claimed that she was sexually assaulted after being taken into custody. The woman arrested by the policemen of Bharatpur police station on Sunday night was released on bail by the High Court. Now the Odisha Police has taken strict action and suspended five policemen on this charge. This also includes the Bharatpur police station in-charge. According to the official statement of Odisha Police, action has been taken against the policemen, police station in-charge Dinakrishna Mishra, Sub Inspector Basilini Panda, Assistant Sub Inspector Salilmayi Sahu, Sagarika Rath and Constable Balram Handa. The statement said that during the suspension, the officers will be under the disciplinary control of the Commissioner of Police of Bhubaneswar-Cuttack. They will get subsistence and dearness allowance as per Rule 90 of the Odisha Service Code.

The fiancée of the captain in the army informed the media about the incident. The woman said that she was returning home with the army officer after closing her restaurant at around 1 am when some youths allegedly misbehaved with them. She said that after this they went to Bharatpur police station to seek help. The woman alleged that when we reached the police station to register an FIR, a woman constable was there in plain clothes. We asked her to register the FIR and send a patrol vehicle to catch the miscreants. Instead of helping me, she misbehaved with me. The woman told that she was dragged in the corridor of the police station.

The woman, who is currently undergoing treatment at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, said that after some time more policemen reached the police station and asked her friend to write a complaint. The woman alleged that I do not know what happened, they put the army officer in the lockup. When I raised my voice and said that the police cannot keep an army officer in custody, two women officers started beating me. The woman said that he tried to retaliate and when the women policemen tried to hold his neck, he bit the hand of a woman policeman.

The woman alleged that the policemen tied her hands and legs and made her sit in a room. According to the woman, after some time a male officer opened the door and kicked my chest several times. The National Commission for Women has taken suo motu cognizance of the incident and sought an action report from the Director General of Police. The police had transferred IIC Mishra and two other officers from Bharatpur police station to ensure a fair investigation. Mishra was reassigned to the Deputy Commissioner of Police office in Bhubaneswar, while ASI Sahu and Constable Handa were sent to the DCP office and reserve office respectively. This prompt action has been taken after a crime branch investigation on the orders of Director General of Police YB Khurania.
