Australia’s Adam Gilchrist is counted among the greatest cricketers of all time. He was not only a world class wicketkeeper but also a brilliant batsman. He redefined the role of a wicketkeeper batsman with his aggressive batting. He played 3 World Cups in his career and managed to win the title all three times. He played his last international match in 2008. 52-year-old Gilchrist has selected his favorite all-time top-3 wicketkeeper batsmen. He has also included former Indian captain and legendary wicketkeeper batsman MS Dhoni.
However, Gilchrist has placed Dhoni below Australia’s great Rodney Marsh. Gilchrist called Marsh his idol. Marsh played 96 Tests and 92 ODIs for Australia between 1970 and 1984. He placed former Sri Lankan captain and dashing wicketkeeper Kumar Sangakkara at number three. Gilchrist told the Times of India, “Rodney Marsh was my idol. I also wanted to be like him. I like MS Dhoni’s calm nature. He used to play in his own way and was always calm. Kumar Sangakkara was amazing, whether it was coming up in the batting order or wicketkeeping skills.”
Pant has to reach Gilchrist’s level… Former wicketkeeper’s frank opinion
Gilchrist also talked about the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to be played between India and Australia, which will begin on November 22. Both teams will clash in a five-match Test series. India has won the last two Test series in Australia and now it will be eyeing a hat-trick. However, Gilchrist said that this time there will be a tough competition between the two teams. He said, “Australia has the responsibility to prove that it is the strongest on its home ground. The Indian team knows how to win abroad.” He said, “Naturally I would call Australia the contender but it will be a very close contest.”
