The United States has now come forward to help Bangladesh, which has been a victim of political upheaval. The US has announced an additional aid of $202 million to improve the economic and social conditions of Bangladesh. The US high delegation, which arrived in Bangladesh for the first time after Sheikh Hasina’s ouster from power, met the head of the interim government, Mohammad Yunus, and announced this aid.
In his televised address last week, Yunus had appealed for $5 billion in international aid to stabilize the economy, saying that Bangladesh’s economy is going through a bad phase. We have faced challenges since the Ukraine-Russia conflict and the increase in fuel and food imports. Bangladesh had also sought a $4.7 billion bailout package from the IMF last year under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina.
America has already given aid worth 425 million
The agreement between the US delegation and the interim government states that the US will provide an additional $202 million in grants to improve good governance, social, human and economic opportunities. This will be similar to the 2021 agreement in which the US promised a total of $954 million in aid between 2021 and 2026, of which $425 million has already reached Bangladesh.
After this meeting, the US Embassy posted on social media that we are doing our best to support Bangladesh for a just and better future. The interim government had sought US support for better functioning of the country’s economy, after which the delegation also expressed its desire to support these efforts by offering technical and financial assistance.
Donald Lu is also included in the delegation
The US delegation that reached Bangladesh also included Assistant Secretary of State for South Asia Donald Lu, who has reached Dhaka today after completing his India tour. According to many reports, Donald Lu is said to be the one who instigated the coup. Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan had directly accused Donald Lu. Just a few days before the coup, Sheikh Hasina had also said in her speech that a big western country is demanding an island from us or else it is threatening to not let our government function. When the Hasina government was overthrown after violent protests in Bangladesh, according to many reports, America was said to be involved in it.
