Almora: ‘Eclipse’ on the business of Almora, traders upset, counted two big reasons

Report: Rohit Bhatt

Almora. ‘Almora Bazaar’ is very famous in the cultural city of Almora, Uttarakhand. It is spread from Milan Chowk in Almora to Paltan Bazaar. People from the border areas of the district also come here for shopping, but now the beauty of this market is ending. The traders of Almora say so. When the team of ‘News 18 Local’ spoke to the traders, they said that now the business is no longer the same. This time the business has reduced even on Diwali. They are afraid that their work may come to a standstill.

Sushil Sah, president of Almora Nagar Vyapar Mandal, told that the way work used to be done earlier, now it is not being done like that. Day by day business is decreasing. It is seen that the government employees who used to come to the market, now they are coming less. There are two reasons for this, first – the collectorate of Almora is shifted from here to another place and second – online shopping. Due to the shift of the collectorate from Malla Mahal of Almora, the traders are suffering a lot, for which the city trade board has started a signature campaign. Their demand is that Tehsil, SDM Court, Tehsildar’s office should be brought again to Malla Mahal.

President Sushil Sah further said that the Municipal Board of Trade continues to oppose online shopping as well. Today many merchants have suffered due to online. If such a situation prevails, then the traders should not migrate anywhere. Signature campaign has been started to bring back some offices of the Collectorate in Malla Mahal. If the demands are not accepted, then the trade union will be forced to launch a fierce agitation.

Shop owner Mohammad Bilal said that the level of shoplifting is gradually decreasing. Shops used to be bright as before, are no longer there. One, online shopping has affected and shopkeepers are facing a lot of loss due to going to the collectorate from above.
