Announcement of CM Jagmohan – Not Amravati but this city will be the capital of AP, popularly known as ‘city of destiny’
Amaravati: Visakhapatnam, known as the city of destiny and the jewel of the east coast, is all set for a new identity as the capital of Andhra Pradesh, as announced by Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy. Addressing a meeting regarding preparations for the Global Investment Summit to be held in Delhi, Jagan had said on Tuesday that the state capital would be shifted to Visakhapatnam and that he would also shift his office to the port city in the coming months. There has been a mixed response to the announcement of making Visakhapatnam the new capital of Andhra Pradesh. While one section has termed it as the right decision, others have expressed concern over the challenges of social issues, pollution and traffic jams already existing in the city.
GV Satyanarayana, former president of the Visakhapatnam unit of the Confederation of Real Estate Developers Association of India (CREDAI), said that Visakhapatnam is a metropolis and has all the infrastructure, so it is a good decision. He told ‘PTI-Bhasha’, ‘Visakhapatnam has necessary infrastructure like international airport, road, port connectivity which is necessary for the capital city.’

EAS Sharma, a retired officer of the Indian Administrative Service and former secretary to the central government, said that he would welcome decentralisation. He said, ‘Making Visakhapatnam the capital will increase a lot of pressure on the citizens here. This will lead to water shortage, increase in pollution and increase in rents. P Krishna Prasad, president of Visakhapatnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said the city is well developed and best suited for the capital.
