A rickshaw driver died after falling into an open drain in Paschim Vihar East area on Monday morning. The entire incident was captured on CCTV cameras. The police have filed an FIR and issued a notice to the civic agency to identify the person responsible. The most shocking part is that the local people had been pleading for several months to cover the drain, but no action was taken. During this time, a young man died after falling into the drain.
The police officer said that the deceased has been identified as 35-year-old Sonu Kumar. Sonu lived with his mother Kiran Devi in Peeragarhi Camp. Family members said that Sonu was suffering from cancer and also suffered from epileptic seizures. He was waiting for a passenger by parking his rickshaw near the drain next to the gate of the DDA flat complex. There is a drain about four feet deep near the flat complex.
In the footage, it is seen that Sonu is talking to a young man standing at the gate. By the time the young man comes inside, Sonu has already fallen into the drain. No one came to know about the accident for a long time. When a passerby went near the rickshaw, he saw Sonu lying in the drain and informed the police. Local resident Mohit Sakhuja said that there is always a possibility of an accident due to the drain being open, but no officer is paying attention to this problem.
Local people say that for the last four months RWAs were giving complaints to cover the 700 meter long drain, but no hearing took place. Due to the negligence of the departments a rickshaw driver lost his life. Recently a five year old girl named Muskan died after falling in an open drain near Akbarpur Majra village in Delhi. Delhi Police had registered a case against the PWD officials in this matter. Earlier, a child had died after falling in an open drain in Wazirpur Industrial Area of Delhi.
