New Delhi: National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah gave an important statement on Tuesday saying that India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru is not responsible for Article 370. Expressing disappointment over the Supreme Court upholding the Centre’s decision to abrogate Article 370, Abdullah spoke on several issues. This reaction of Farooq Abdullah came after Union Home Minister Amit Shah held Nehru responsible for the Kashmir problem in Parliament. Abdullah said, ‘I don’t know why his mind is filled with venom against Nehru.’

‘Patel was there at the time of Article 370’

Abdullah, who was the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, said, ‘Nehru is not responsible. When Article 370 came, Sardar Patel was there. Nehru was in America when the cabinet meeting was held. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee was also present when the decision was taken. When asked whether the abrogation of this article has marked the beginning of development in Jammu and Kashmir, he said, ‘Go and see for yourself. We want elections to be held. We were expecting that if the Supreme Court removes Article 370 then they will be asked to hold elections immediately. They were given time till September (2024), what does this mean?

‘Government has to take a decision on PoK’

When asked about India’s claim on Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK), he said, ‘This decision has to be taken by the government. We have never stopped anyone. Let us tell you that the Supreme Court on Monday unanimously upheld the 2019 decision to abrogate Article 370 of the Constitution, which gave special status to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir. This is being considered a big victory for the Narendra Modi government at the Centre. The court ordered assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir by the end of September next year and said that its statehood should be restored ‘as soon as possible’.
