Assam government took action on child marriage, women got angry, so far more than 2 thousand people arrested

Dhubri. A large number of women protested in front of a police station in Assam’s Dhubri Women Protest against the Assam government’s action regarding child marriage. Security personnel had to resort to lathicharge to disperse the women gathered to protest in front of Tamarhat police station in Dhubri district. The women demanded the release of their husbands and sons arrested by the police in cases related to child marriage. According to the police, when the protesters tried to break the gate and security barrier of the police station, the security personnel had to resort to lathicharge.

Dhubri district Superintendent of Police Aparna N told ANI that a CRPF jawan was injured during the brawl. Aparna N said, ‘There is no information about any injury to the women protesting outside the police station. The situation is now under control. Let us tell you that the Assam Police has so far arrested 2258 people across the state in cases related to child marriage. Addressing a press conference on Friday, Assam Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh said that those arrested included 52 priests and qazis involved in child marriages.

CM had received inputs regarding child marriage
He said, ‘The maximum number of people have been arrested from Dhubri, Barpeta, Kokrajhar and Vishwanath districts.’ DGP Singh further told that Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had directed the police to investigate. Because they had received inputs that child marriage is happening on a large scale in the state. The officer said that most of the cases have been registered under various provisions of the POCSO Act and sections of the IPC and action will be taken as per the law.

Action will continue till 2026 assembly elections
He said that the arrested persons would be produced in the court. Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the drive against child marriage will continue in the state in the coming days.Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Saturday that the drive would continue till the 2026 assembly elections.
