Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Vishwa Sharma has hit back at senior lawyer Kapil Sibal regarding a statement given regarding his state. Sibal had claimed that Assam was once a part of Myanmar. Leader of Opposition in Assam Assembly Debabrata Saikia wrote a letter to Sibal asking him to withdraw the statement and apologise. Sibal, who appeared in the Supreme Court during the hearing on the citizenship issue earlier this week, had claimed that Assam was part of Myanmar and was ceded to them by the British in 1824 after they conquered part of the territory.

‘Assam was never a part of Myanmar’

Responding to Kapil Sibal’s statement, Chief Minister Himanta Vishwa Sharma had said on Friday that except for the brief occupation of Assam, the state was never a part of Myanmar. The Chief Minister said, ‘Assam was never a part of Myanmar. It is true that the people of Myanmar had conflicts with our people during the Ahom rule. For a very short period of about one-two months we were in a situation like the occupation of Myanmar. People who have no knowledge about history should refrain from commenting on it.

Sibal has been in Congress for a long time

Congress leader Saikia, in a letter written to Sibal on Saturday, claimed, ‘The misrepresentation of Assam’s history is very unfortunate and has hurt the pride and prestige of Assam. It seems that Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind and AAMSU may have provided you with wrong information about the history of Assam and your team has failed to check the information before presentation. Let us tell you that Kapil Sibal was in Congress for a long time and has also been a minister at the Centre. This statement of Sibal was criticized a lot on social media also and people used very strong words for him.
