The Supreme Court has sought an answer on the Central Government not approving the names sent by the Collegium. The apex court on Friday asked the Central Government to tell how many names have not been considered yet and the reasons for this. Apart from this, the court has also asked that if these names have not been approved, then at what level are they pending. The Supreme Court asked the Attorney General to make a list of those names whose names were recommended and a final decision has not been taken on them. He was asked to tell why and at what level the approval on these names is pending.
On this, the Attorney General on behalf of the Central Government said that we will give information about this by next week. Attorney General R. Venkataramani made these comments before a bench headed by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and requested to postpone the hearing on a PIL listed for Friday. The Attorney General told this bench comprising Justice J.B. Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra, ‘We will provide some details about the Collegium’s recommendations. Please hear the petition (listed for Friday) only after a week.’
The bench said that arguments for adjournment can be given only on Friday as the matter is already pending. Meanwhile, the Chief Justice told the Attorney General that the Jharkhand government has filed a contempt petition against the Center for not appointing the Chief Justice in the High Court of the state. To this, the Attorney General said, ‘I do not know.’ Let us tell you that the Hemant Soren-led Jharkhand government has approached the apex court against the central government for not approving the collegium’s recommendation to appoint Justice MS Ramachandra Rao as the Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court.
