The case of rape and murder of a trainee doctor in a government hospital in Kolkata has reached CJI DY Chandrachud. Three letter petitions have been sent to the CJI, including a petition from a doctor of the Army College. These petitions say that the CJI should take suo motu cognizance of this horrific incident and order immediate action.
Two petitioners are Supreme Court lawyers Rohit Pandey and Ujjwal Gaur. The third petitioner is Dr. Monika Singh who is a BDS student at Army College of Dental College, Secunderabad. Rohit Pandey is the former secretary of the Supreme Court Bar Association. Ujjwal Gaur is a member of the Supreme Court Bar Association.
Supreme Court lawyers Rohit Pandey and Ujjwal Gaur said that this case is very horrific and rare. This is an atrocity on the soul of our country. Not only a doctor but humanity has been attacked. He said that CJI Chandrachud needs to give appropriate instructions in this case. The petition states that this barbaric incident has shaken the soul of the whole country. Seeing the crying family of the victim, everyone’s heart melts. However, there are not many words to speak about the incident. As a nation, we should stand up and ensure a speedy investigation and justice in this case.
The petition states that the judiciary needs to take appropriate steps in this matter and send a message to the public. Such barbaric incidents cannot be tolerated. Action is also necessary to protect a woman’s self-respect and the law. Dr. Monica Singh said in her petition that CJI Chandrachud should take suo motu cognizance of the matter. She said that the court should also give appropriate instructions regarding security in hospitals. Central forces are needed for the security of hospitals.
