Bhopal Gas Tragedy: Satisfactory work not done in the direction of rehabilitation, High Court gave these strict instructions

Bhopal. For the victims of Bhopal Gas Tragedy, the Madhya Pradesh High Court has expressed displeasure over the lack of satisfactory work towards their rehabilitation. While hearing the matter on Friday, the Division Bench of Justice Sheel Nagu has directed that the Deputy Director of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) should present complete details within 4 weeks that till now the direction of the High Court’s earlier instructions What are some things done in During the hearing, ICMR’s Senior Deputy Director R Ramakrishnan, who was present in the High Court through virtual mode, said that correspondence has been done twice by him in connection with the vacant posts and specialist doctors appointed in Bhopal BMHRC Hospital.

During this, it has also come to light that the government will have to bear an additional expenditure of more than 7 crores every year in increasing the salary of doctors and in new appointments. The action on this whole matter is in progress and the reply is awaited. In the whole matter, the High Court has directed that the Senior Deputy Director General of ICMR should submit a reply on the entire matter within 4 weeks and also submit the reply of the Ministry of Health Research. The High Court said that if the reply is not presented within 4 weeks, then the Secretary of the Central Health and Family Welfare Department will have to appear in the High Court through virtual mode and present the reply. The next hearing of the entire matter has been fixed on January 18, 2023.

The petition was filed in 2012
It is noteworthy that in the year 2012, a petition was filed in the High Court by Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Udyog Sangathan and others. In that, instructions were issued during the hearing regarding the treatment and rehabilitation of Bhopal gas victims. Monitoring committee was also formed to ensure the implementation of these points. He was instructed to present his report before the High Court every 3 months. The recommendations of the committee were not implemented during the pendency of the petition in the High Court. After that a contempt petition was filed. It was said in the contempt petition that till now the health cards of the gas victims of Bhopal could not be made.

Health specialists including equipment and medicines are also not available in the hospital as required. At the same time, due to non-fixation of recruitment rules in BMHRC, doctors and paramedical staff are not providing their services on a permanent basis. In the petition, the Secretary of the Central Environment Welfare Department, the Secretary of the Central Department of Chemicals and Fertilizers, the State Government and the Secretary of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy Relief and Rehabilitation Department, including ICMR and others were made parties.
