BJP’s competition is not possible without Congress, the party will be the pivot of opposition in 2024 – Jairam Ramesh

Awantipora (Kashmir): Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said on Saturday that his party would have to be the backbone of any opposition alliance formed to take on the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. He also said that in his opinion the Congress should prepare to fight in every state on its own in the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. Ramesh also said in an interview to ‘PTI-Bhasha’ that he would try his best to take out another yatra from Porbandar in Gujarat to Parshurampur Kund in Arunachal Pradesh after the completion of ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’, but Ultimately the party has to decide.

He says, ‘I am definitely thinking about it. Whether the party will take out the yatra or not, I cannot say about it now. But when there was talk of ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ in Udaipur (during Chintan Shivir), then there was an idea to travel from west to east as well. When asked whether the Congress would form the basis of the opposition alliance after the ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’, Ramesh said, ‘I believe so. The reason for this is also because we are the only truly national party even today (apart from the BJP). According to the Congress leader, ‘We may not be in power in many states, but in every village, locality, block, town and city you will find a Congress worker, a Congress family.’

Ramesh claimed that the BJP may be in power, but the Congress is the only national political force when it comes to mass presence. He said, ‘Yes, we are Aadhaar. We will fight the BJP. Only an alliance formed around the Congress can do this (to counter the BJP). According to Ramesh, ideally he would like the Congress to take on the BJP alone, but that may not be realistic in 2024. He said, ‘I am of the opinion that in 2029 we should prepare to contest elections on our own in every state. But I am well aware that my stand may not get support within the party itself.

However, he also said that in some states the Congress has given too much scope to its allies and this is detrimental to the building of the organization. Ramesh said that Rahul Gandhi has always been saying that first the organization should be built and then the party will come to power, but the Congress did the opposite. He said that this stand of Rahul Gandhi is correct. Asked if personal ambitions are hurting Congress hopes in several states and how will the tussle between Ashok Gehlot and Sachin Pilot in Rajasthan be resolved? So Ramesh said, ‘Private ambition has been the agony of the Congress. ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ has brought a sense of collective purpose and togetherness and this is needed in all the states including Rajasthan.

He said that the organization is above the ego and ambition of individuals and what is good for the organization is good for the individuals associated with the party, but what is good for an individual is not necessarily good for the party. Ho. Mentioning the success of ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’, the Congress General Secretary said that there has been a change in the discourse regarding the Congress.
