The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is probing the alleged rape and murder of a female doctor at the government R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata city on August 9, on Friday summoned the former principal of the institute, Sandip Ghosh, for questioning for the 14th consecutive day. Officials said that the agency has already questioned Ghosh for more than 140 hours. They said that Ghosh is being questioned about this heinous crime. He is also on the radar of the agency in the alleged financial misconduct case in the hospital and an FIR has already been registered against him and other institutions.
The agency again questioned Sandeep Ghosh
The agency officials searched the former principal’s residence and questioned him last Sunday. Ghosh was seen walking inside the CGO Complex in Salt Lake, where the agency’s eastern regional headquarters is located, at around 10.45 am. Several teams of the CBI visited the government tax hospital on Thursday as part of its investigation. A CBI official said that the first of the three teams from the Nizam Palace office of the central agency, which is investigating alleged financial irregularities, visited the hospital’s mortuary and took stock of its infrastructure, safekeeping of bodies and protocols related to conducting post-mortem.
Forensic officer talked to the employees
He said that the five-member team interacted with the doctors and staff of the hospital, including the head of the forensic department and the current vice-principal Dr. Saptarshi Chatterjee, to further clarify the situation on the issue. The central agency is conducting this investigation after complaints made by the former deputy superintendent of the hospital Akhtar Ali, in which he had made allegations of smuggling of unclaimed bodies, corruption in the disposal of biomedical waste, nepotism in construction tenders and other financial malpractices during Ghosh’s tenure as the principal. The official said that the second CBI team from Nizam Palace searched the store building of the hospital, where medical and purchase related documents are kept. It was told that another CBI team on Thursday went to the chest disease department located on the third floor of the emergency building of the hospital, where the victim was on duty that night.
18 days have passed, but some questions remain unresolved
The team inspected the crime scene and spoke to nurses and other staff of the hospital. So far, the investigation has led to the arrest of only one person, Sanjay Roy, who is currently in judicial custody. Even after 18 days since the CBI took over the investigation on the orders of the Calcutta High Court, many questions related to the crime remain unanswered and are circulating among the public, including whether more than one person was involved in the crime, what were the results of DNA testing of the fluid found in the victim’s genitals, forensic test report of tissue samples found in the victim’s nails, whether responsibility has been fixed for the alleged alteration of the crime scene.
