The government has written a letter to the Chief Secretaries and Directors General of Police (DGP) of all states and union territories. It said that safety measures and a safe working environment should be provided to doctors and health workers in all medical institutions.
Action report should be submitted by 10 September
Union Health Secretary Apurva Chandra on Wednesday issued instructions to all states and Union Territories (UTs), asking them to submit an action report by September 10 on safety measures for doctors and health workers.
The Supreme Court had issued the order
The directive comes following a recent Supreme Court order which stressed the need for immediate corrective action to ensure the safety of doctors working in the medical line across the country.
Identifying risky institutions
In a letter addressed to the Chief Secretaries and Directors General of Police of all States and Union Territories, Chandra, the Health Secretary, has outlined several key measures to be prioritised by the States and Union Territories. This includes identification of high-risk institutions, security audits, CCTV surveillance, background checks and several other protocols.
Hospitals which have a high number of patients should be identified
States and Union Territories have been asked to identify hospitals where there is a high number of patients. The Health Secretary recommended conducting regular security audits in consultation with local health and police officials to assess and improve existing security measures in hospitals. According to Chandra, special attention should be paid to areas of hospitals where security is prone to breach, such as emergency rooms, triage areas, ICUs and delivery rooms.
