New Delhi: Chandigarh Mayor election is in the news all over the country as the Supreme Court has declared Aam Aadmi Party candidate Kuldeep Kumar the winner of Chandigarh Mayor election and canceled the victory of BJP candidate Manoj Sonkar. Apart from this, notice has also been given to the Election Officer (Returning Officer). The Supreme Court has said that the officer lied. The name of this officer is Anil Masih and now people want to know about him, why did he commit this mistake?

Who is Anil Masih?

Anil Masih is 53 years old. He is being accused of making irregularities in the Chandigarh Mayor elections. He had also joined BJP a few years ago and was hoping to get a ticket from Ward 13 in the 2021 Chandigarh Municipal Corporation elections. However this did not happen. But BJP nominated him for Chandigarh Municipal Corporation next year. In the year 2021 itself, BJP had also made him the General Secretary of Minority Morcha.

What is the whole matter?

Actually, voting for the mayor elections was held in Chandigarh on 30 January. In which BJP’s Manoj Sonkar got 16 votes and AAP-Congress’ joint candidate Kuldeep Kumar got 12 votes. During this time, Returning Officer Anil Masih had declared 8 votes invalid.

When this matter came to light, Congress and AAP went to the Supreme Court. Where the bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud held the hearing on February 5 and adopted a strict tone on Anil Masih. Anil Masih has also confessed in the court that he had made a cross mark on the ballot paper.

How did the election go wrong?

The total number of councilors in Chandigarh Municipal Corporation is 36. To win the post of Mayor, 19 votes are required. In such a situation, the AAP candidate got 12 votes and 8 votes were declared invalid. Had the votes not been declared invalid, the AAP candidate would have got 20 votes and would have won.
