A look at the life of Chaudhary Charan Singh
Chaudhary Charan Singh was born on 23 December 1902. He was born in a middle-class farmer family in Noorpur, Meerut district of Uttar Pradesh. He was the fifth Prime Minister of India from 28 July 1979 to 14 January 1980. His father, Mir Singh, was a self-employed tenant farmer and his mother was Netra Kaur. Charan Singh did his schooling in Jani Khurd village. He completed his matriculation from Government High School in 1919. In 1923, he completed his BSc from Agra College and MA in History in 1925. After this he also studied law. Also practiced civil law in Ghaziabad.

In the year 1929, he joined the Indian National Congress and then he always remained in politics. Chaudhary Charan Singh lived his entire life in the dignity of Indianness and rural environment. Chaudhary Charan Singh had also made important contribution in the independence of the country. For this he also went to jail several times. Today, Chaudhary Charan Singh’s birthday is also celebrated as Farmer’s Day.
In his political journey, he was first elected to the Uttar Pradesh Assembly from Chhaprauli in 1937. He then represented his constituency in the Assembly consecutively in 1946, 1952, 1962 and 1967. Chaudhary Charan Singh became Parliamentary Secretary in the government of Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant in 1946 and worked in many departments including Revenue, Medical and Public Health, Justice, Information. In June 1951 he was appointed as a state Cabinet Minister and given charge of the Justice and Information portfolios. In 1952, he was the Minister of Revenue and Agriculture in the cabinet of Dr. Sampurnanand. When he resigned from the post in April 1959, he was holding the charge of the Revenue and Transport Department.

Chaudhary Charan Singh C.B. He was the Home and Agriculture Minister in Gupta’s ministry (1960). At the same time, he was the Minister of Agriculture and Forests (1962-63) in the ministry of Sucheta Kripalani. He left the Agriculture Department in 1965 and took charge of the Local Self Government Department in 1966. After the Congress split, he became the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh for the second time in February 1970 with the support of the Congress Party.
