Shimla: Amid the ongoing protests in Himachal Pradesh over the illegal construction of Sanjauli mosque, the Congress high command on Thursday strongly reprimanded Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu and Minister Anirudh Singh for failing to deal with the issue. According to sources, the Congress high command is angry with CM Sukhsu over the issue. The party has directed action to calm communal tension.
Protest in Sanjauli on mosque issue
In fact, Shimla is witnessing a lot of unrest as protests have started in Sanjauli over the mosque issue. During the protest, several policemen including some protesters were injured and admitted to hospital. State minister Vikramaditya Singh said that the law will do its job.
The mosque committee extended a hand for peace
In a major development, officials of the mosque committee met the municipal commissioner to defuse the growing tension. The committee expressed its willingness to seal the mosque premises to maintain communal harmony. They submitted a written statement agreeing to respect any decision made by the commissioner’s court.
Shimla remained closed due to police action on protesters
Shops and businesses remained closed in Shimla during a three-hour bandh on Thursday to protest police action against protesters demanding demolition of an unauthorised portion of a mosque in Sanjauli. The bandh, called by the Shimla Vyapar Mandal, a BJP-affiliated traders’ body, lasted from 10 am to 1 pm. According to Vyapar Mandal president Sanjeev Thakur, the protesters marched to the Deputy Commissioner’s office and the bandh was reportedly peaceful.
The protest was against police action on Wednesday where Hindu groups calling for the demolition of the mosque were lathicharged and dispersed with water cannon after breaking barricades. Ten people, including six police officers, were injured in the clash.
