Kharge is close to the Gandhi family. Kharge has good relations with opposition leaders like Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Sharad Pawar and CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury. Mallikarjun Kharge is considered a trusted confidant of the Gandhi family, for which he has been rewarded with loyalty from the party from time to time. He was an influential leader of the United Trade Union, which led many movements for workers’ rights. Kharge was born in a farming family in Varavatti area of ​​Bidar district of Karnataka. He completed his schooling from Nutan Vidyalaya in Gulbarga and completed his graduation from Government College, Gulbarga. Then Seth Shankarlal of Gulbarga started practicing law after doing LLB from Lahoti Law College. Kharge had the hand of Congress in the year 1969 and became MLA for the first time in 1972 from Gurmitkal assembly seat of Karnataka. Kharge was elected MLA nine times from Gurmitkal seat. During this time he also held the post of minister in various departments.

Kharge was the state’s home minister in 2000 when Kannada superstar Dr. Rajkumar was kidnapped by sandalwood smuggler Veerappan. In the Manmohan Singh government at its center, he played the role of Minister of Labor and Employment and Minister of Railways. Kharge may consider himself to be from Karnataka, but his roots are basically in Maharashtra.

His son Priyank Kharge is also in politics, who is currently a second term Congress MLA.
