Contrary to Congress’s claim on ‘Sengol’, Shashi Tharoor argued, said- everyone should adopt this symbol of the past
New Delhi. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Sunday took a stand contrary to that of his party on the issue of ‘sengol’, saying everyone should adopt this symbol from the past to reaffirm the values of the present. Dedicating the new Parliament House to the nation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi installed the historic ‘Sengol’ in the Lok Sabha chamber. In such a situation, Tharoor confirmed the government’s argument that ‘Sengol’ reflects the continuity of tradition, although he also justified the opposition’s argument that ‘the constitution was adopted in the name of the people’.
Tharoor said on Twitter, ‘My own view on the Sengol dispute is that both sides have good arguments. The government’s argument is correct that the scepter signifies the continuity of tradition by embodying sacred sovereignty and rule of religion.
‘Arguments of power and opposition are correct in their respective places’
Tharoor tweeted, ‘My own view on the Sengol dispute is that the arguments of both the sides are correct in their respective places. The government’s argument is correct that the scepter signifies the continuity of tradition by embodying sacred sovereignty and rule of religion. At the same time, the opposition is also right in arguing that the constitution was adopted in the name of the people and that sovereignty rests with the people of India in the form of representation in their parliament. It is not the prerogative of a king conferred by divine right.’
“If the irrelevant details about the scepter handed over by Mountbatten to (Jawaharlal) Nehru as a symbol of transfer of power are left out, the stand of the two sides can be reconciled,” he said. (Regarding the scepter) This is a story without any proof. Instead, we should simply say that the sengol, the scepter, is a traditional symbol of power and authority, and by placing it in the Lok Sabha, India is affirming that sovereignty resides there, not with any monarch.’

Jairam Ramesh had told bogus on the claims on Sengol
The point to be noted here is that Tharoor’s stand on the issue of Sengol is quite different from the stand of other party leaders. Especially Congress leader Jairam Ramesh had taken a tough stand against the Center accusing it of spreading ‘false narrative’ in this matter.
Jairam Ramesh had tweeted, ‘Is it any wonder that the new Parliament House is being beautified with fake discussions of WhatsApp University? BJP/RSS’s attitude of distorting history stands exposed once again with ‘maximum claims, minimum evidence’.
He said, ‘The scepter was conceived by a religious establishment in the then Madras and it was prepared in the city of Madras. It was handed over to Jawaharlal Nehru in August 1947. He claimed that there is no documentary evidence that Lord Mountbatten, C Rajagopalachari and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru described the ‘scepter’ as a symbol of the transfer of power to India by the British. The claims being made by the BJP in this regard are ‘bogus’.
