Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi has fueled a new controversy by commenting on secularism. He has described secularism as a European concept, which has increased political fervor. Congress and other parties have called it an irresponsible statement. Regarding the Governor’s comment, Congress has demanded his dismissal from the constitutional post. Congress said that the Governor is doing what Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants to do.

Congress expressed objection to the Governor’s statement

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh posted on ‘X’, “This person has taken oath on the Constitution and is still holding the constitutional office. He should be sacked immediately. He is a disgrace.” He said that this is not his first derogatory and unacceptable statement. The Congress general secretary alleged that the governor is repeating what Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants to do.

Secularism is not an Indian concept: Governor

In fact, Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi says that secularism is not an Indian concept. Secularism is a European concept, which has no place in India. He said that secularism arose in Europe due to the conflict between the Church and the King. The European concept of secularism should remain there, while India is a religion-centric nation and hence it was not a part of the Constitution. It was added by an insecure Prime Minister during the Emergency. He made this statement while addressing a program in Kanyakumari district on Sunday.

Indira Gandhi was criticised, termed as insecure PM

The governor alleged that decades later, during the Emergency, an insecure prime minister introduced secularism in the Constitution to appease certain sections of the people. He further said secularism emerged in Europe when the Church and the King fought and the concept was developed to end the long-running conflict. Citing the Constituent Assembly discussions, he said it was discussed there that India was a country of religion. “How can there be a conflict with religion? How can India move away from religion? This cannot happen,” he said.
