Correct the mistake… Historians said – Jama Masjid is not the biggest mosque of the country

New Delhi: Which is the largest mosque in the country? Jama Masjid or any other. Contrary to the claims of hoardings in Delhi and the website of the Delhi Tourism Department, many historians say that the grand Jama Masjid in the capital is not the largest mosque in the country. Historians said that the Taj-ul-Masjid located in Bhopal is the largest mosque in the country.

The famous Jama Masjid of Delhi was built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in 1656. The Taj-ul-Masjid was built between 1868–1901 by Shah Jahan Begum, the third female ruler of Bhopal. Taj-ul-Masjid means crown of mosques. The marble-domed Jama Masjid has been described as the largest mosque in India on billboards, which are visible across the city. Apart from the huge hoardings, the claim of Jama Masjid being the largest mosque in the country is also found on the website of Delhi Tourism Department.

It has been written on the website about the mosque, this grand mosque of Old Delhi is the largest in India…. Delhi historian Sohail Hashmi recently took to Facebook to correct this claim. He wrote on his Facebook, Delhi government, Jama Masjid is not the biggest mosque in India. The Taj-ul-Masjid in Bhopal is 33 percent bigger than this.

Hashmi said the architecturally rich Jama Masjid is important not because of its size but because of its style of Mughal architecture, which has inspired many people to follow the original design of Jama Masjid. Apart from the Taj-ul-Masjid, the design of the Badshahi Mosque (in Lahore) built by Aurangzeb is also based on it. Professor Hasan Khan of Darul Uloom of Taj-ul-Masjid also agrees with Hashmi.

Khan said that the Taj-ul-Masjid is actually the largest mosque in India which is one-third times bigger than the Jama Masjid. In fact, in my personal opinion, it is the largest mosque in the world in terms of covered area. However, the Badshahi Mosque built by Aurangzeb is the largest if both the open area and the covered area are taken together.

Although no verified dimensions are readily available, several websites such as Culture Trip and Hello Travel claim that the Taj-ul-Masjid has a seating capacity of 1,75,000 people. At the same time, according to Britannica.com, only 25,000 people can sit in the courtyard of Jama Masjid. The claim of Delhi’s Jama Masjid being the largest mosque in India is false.
