Crowd turned violent during protest in Kolkata, police arrested 9 people

The police have arrested nine people a few hours after unidentified miscreants vandalised a portion of the Government Medical College and Hospital here. The nurses of the hospital were protesting on Thursday following the violence. It may be noted that a female trainee doctor was found dead in the same hospital last week.

The vandalism took place at midnight amid a protest by women against the rape and murder of a doctor at the hospital. According to police, a group of about 40 people posing as protesters entered the hospital premises, damaged property and pelted stones at policemen, following which policemen had to fire tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.

Police said that the rioters, who came armed with sticks, bricks and rods, vandalised the emergency ward, nursing station, dispensary and a portion of the outpatient department (OPD) of the hospital located in north Kolkata. The rioters broke several CCTV cameras in and around the area and also vandalised the stage where junior doctors have been protesting since the evening of August 9, following the rape and murder of a woman doctor in the hospital.

Police said that a police vehicle and some two-wheelers present at the spot were damaged in the incident. An officer said that some police officers were also injured in the violence. The hospital staff cleaned the damaged emergency ward. The rioters destroyed important medical equipment and furniture kept in this ward.
