Rajiv Gandhi Assassination: Nalini Sriharan, one of the acquitted convicts in former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination case, on Sunday (November 13) said that Priyanka Gandhi during her meeting in jail in 2008 Asked about the murder of his father. Responding to a question about the alleged meeting in her first ever press conference here, Nalini said she told Priyanka whatever she knew.

When asked whether Priyanka looked strong or broke down emotionally during their meeting at the Vellore Central Jail in Tamil Nadu in 2008, Nalini said yes, she got very emotional. Nalini said that despite the passage of time, the wounds Priyanka received due to her father’s murder had not healed even in that meeting.

‘Priyanka was crying’
When asked again whether Priyanka was crying, Nalini said yes she did. Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated on 21 May 1991 in a suicide bombing in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu.
Nalini said that other things cannot be disclosed in the meeting as it is related to Priyanka’s personal views.

Nalini was released on November 12 following a Supreme Court order. Asked if she was hesitant to meet the members of the Gandhi family, Nalini said such hesitation was due to the backdrop of the murder case. She said that if the people of Gandhi family wanted to meet her, she would meet them.

‘Daughter is living in London’
When asked about the lessons she has learned in the jail over 30 years, Nalini said that the jail is a big university where she has learned many things. Asked if she has any plans to write an autobiographical book on life in jail and her legal struggle for safe release, she said her only focus is on being with her husband Sriharan and their daughter living in London.

In 1999, the Supreme Court had confirmed the death sentence to Nalini, her husband Sriharan and two others. In 2000, the Tamil Nadu government commuted Nalini’s death sentence to life imprisonment. Nalini and Sriharan are among the six convicts released on November 12 following the apex court’s order.
