‘IB’s capabilities underutilised’

A Home Ministry official said, “The Home Minister underlined that the IB has the widest network among all agencies in the country and expressed concern that its capabilities were somewhat underutilised. He emphasized that observed that the IB was not supposed to merely identify problems and prepare reports. He was of the view that given the agency’s capabilities, it should be actively involved in the issues and try to resolve them.”

It is said that Shah listened to the presentations of officials of about 10 states in a span of six hours while giving feedback and opinion on the expectations of the government from the agency.

A security official said, “It was the home minister’s effort to know all the officers posted in the states and try to understand the issues from their perspective. In a statement issued later, the home ministry said there were extensive discussions on issues related to national security, including terrorism, extremism, cyber security, inter-state border disputes and cross-border elements. “Our fight is against terrorism as well as its support system, unless we fight vigorously against both of them, victory over terrorism cannot be achieved,” the ministry quoted Shah as saying in the meeting.
