Sri Lanka’s newly elected President Anuru Kumara Disanayake made a big comment about the neighboring countries. He said that they do not want to become a ‘sandwich’. In this context, he specifically mentioned China and India. It is believed that Sri Lanka’s foreign policy is going to be very tough during Disanayake’s tenure. During an interview, he said that after siding with one country, we would like to maintain a balance with our close neighbors India and China.

On foreign policy, Sri Lanka’s new president said that we do not want to fall between China and India. The NPP government expects close partnership with both. Apart from this, we want to maintain relations with the European Union, the Middle East and Africa. According to Dissanayake, a neutral foreign policy is important for Sri Lanka to protect its sovereignty amid growing regional tensions. The President made it clear that Sri Lanka will not be a player in the power struggle between global superpowers. Instead, it will focus on building mutually beneficial diplomatic partnerships.

Sri Lanka’s leftist leader Dissanayake took charge as President on Monday. He promised to bring change in the country which has been ruled by powerful political families till now. Sri Lanka is currently recovering from its worst economic crisis. Dissanayake was declared the new President late on Sunday night. He replaced Ranil Wickremesinghe, who was appointed by the Parliament to complete the remaining term of President Rajapaksa.

Dissanayake, popularly known as AKD, secured a total of 1.27 million votes in this election. He defeated his closest rival Sajith Premadasa, while Wickremesinghe came in third. Sri Lanka’s close countries, India, China, Pakistan and Maldives have congratulated him. The spokesperson of the Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Monday that we hope that stability and development will continue in Sri Lanka. We are willing to play a positive role in the economic and social development there.

On the domestic front, Dissanayake’s priority is to get Sri Lanka out of the economic crisis. He said that we are a bankrupt nation. He also spoke about Sri Lanka’s 34 billion euro foreign debt, rising poverty levels and increasing prices of essential commodities in the interview. Targeting previous governments, the Sri Lankan President held them responsible for the economic crisis.
