Economist Bibek Debroy, Chairman of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council, has passed away at the age of 69. PM Modi has also shared a post on social media account X on the death of Bibek Debroy. Sharing the post on Instagram, PM Modi wrote, “I have known Dr. Debroy for many years. I will always remember his insights and his passion for academic discussion. Saddened by his demise. My condolences to his family and friends. Sentiments. Dr. Bibek Debroy, who was well-versed in economics, history, politics and other diverse fields, left an indelible mark on the intellectual landscape of India. In addition to his contributions to public policy, he also enjoyed working on our ancient texts and making them accessible to youth.”
Who was Bibek Debroy?
Bibek Debroy was an Indian economist who served as the Chairman of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister of India. He was also the Chairman of the Expert Committee on Infrastructure Classification and Financing Framework for the AMRUT period of the Ministry of Finance. Debroy has made significant contributions to game theory, economic theory, income and social inequalities, poverty, law reforms, railway reforms and Indology etc. Bibek Debroy has also been a member of the Government of India’s think tank NITI Aayog from 2015 to 2019. He was awarded Padma Shri in the year 2015. He has also been honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the US-India Business Summit. He has also been honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Australia India Chamber of Commerce.

His father was involved in the Indian Audit and Accounts Service. He did his schooling from Ramakrishna Mission School, Narendrapur. After this he went to Presidency College, Kolkata for further studies. After this Debroy went to Cambridge University on a Trinity College scholarship, where he did further studies.
