The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has sent a fresh summons to Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren for questioning in a money laundering case related to the alleged land scam. Official sources said on Monday that Soren has been asked to appear at the ED office on Tuesday and record his statement under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). He said that Chief Minister Soren has been asked to appear before the federal agency on December 12.

The agency has issued notice 6 times

This is the sixth notice issued to Soren by the Enforcement Directorate, but he has not appeared before the agency even once. CM Soren had ignored the summons issued in August, claiming that he was busy with the state’s Independence Day celebrations. After this, he was asked to appear again on 24 August and 9 September, but citing busy schedule, he did not appear before the ED.

Hemant Soren has filed a petition in the Supreme Court requesting protection from ED action. The 48-year-old Jharkhand Mukti Morcha leader was questioned by the federal agency in November last year in another money laundering case related to alleged illegal mining in the state.

ED has arrested 14 people

The Enforcement Directorate alleges that “a big gang of illegal land ownership change by mafia was active in Jharkhand”. The agency has arrested 14 people in this case, including 2011 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer Chhavi Ranjan. Ranjan previously served as the Director of the State Social Welfare Department and Deputy Commissioner of Ranchi.
