Hemant Soren: The Central Investigation Agency (ED) has summoned Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren. This summon has been sent in the case of PMLA regarding illegal mining. Hemant Soren has been called for questioning tomorrow. The ED has already arrested Soren’s aide Pankaj Mishra in this case. The probe agency had also raided 18 locations in Jharkhand on July 8 linked to Soren’s associate Pankaj Mishra and his business associates.
Reason for sending summons to Hemant Soren?
During the raid in Sahibganj, an envelope was found by the ED from the house of Pankaj Mishra. According to media reports, this envelope contained a checkbook linked to the Chief Minister’s bank account. In this, two checks were also signed. Apart from this, two AK-47 and 60 bullets allotted to the jawans deployed for the security of Chief Minister’s residence from Prem Prakash’s house were also seized by the ED. At the same time, during the time Pankaj Mishra was admitted in RIMS, the ED has also found evidence of talking to officials on the phone and intimidating him in the name of the Chief Minister. The ED has got such evidence which shows that Pankaj Misri and his associates used to intimidate the district officials in the name of Chief Minister in the case of illegal mining.

The ED had filed a PMLA complaint against Pankaj Mishra and others in March this year, claiming that they had “illegally acquired huge assets in their favour.” After this, the ED conducted raids and frozen Rs 11.88 crore deposited in 37 bank accounts of Mishra. The government agency also seized “unaccounted currency” worth Rs 5.34 crore. The ED claimed that the money was related to illegal mining in Jharkhand. In addition, five illegally operating stone crushers and an equal number of illegal gun cartridges were seized.
Earlier, the probe agency ED had arrested Pankaj Mishra on July 19, 2022, Bacchu Yadav on August 4 and Prem Prakash on August 25. The arrested accused persons are presently in judicial custody. The ED had initiated a money laundering probe against Pankaj Mishra and others under various sections of the IPC at Barharwa police station, Sahebganj district, Jharkhand. Later, several FIRs in respect of illegal mining registered under IPC, Explosive Substances Act, Arms Act have also been taken under the purview of scheduled offences.
