The Security Affairs Committee of the Union Cabinet has taken a big decision to strengthen the country’s defense. It approved the proposal to purchase 240 aero engines for the Air Force’s major fighter aircraft Sukhoi-30 at a cost of Rs 26,000 crore. The proposal was accepted in a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Under this, 240 aero-engines (AL-31 FP) will be purchased from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited under the buy category for the Sukhoi-30 MKI fighter aircraft of the Air Force. The purchase of these aircraft will cost more than Rs 26,000 crore including all taxes and duties. The delivery of these aero-engines will start after one year and will be completed in a period of 8 years.
A statement issued by the Defense Ministry said, ‘The engines will have more than 54 percent indigenous content, which has increased due to indigenization of some key components of the aero-engine. These will be manufactured at HAL’s Koraput division.’ It is known that the Sukhoi-30 aircraft is one of the most powerful and strategically important fleets of the Air Force. The supply of these aero-engines by HAL will meet the requirement of the Air Force fleet. This will enable them to continue operating without interruption and further strengthen the country’s defense preparedness.
