New Delhi. The Supreme Court on Friday released 6 killers of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. After release, murder convict Nalini Sriharan told News18- ‘I know that I am not a terrorist. I have suffered for many years in jail. The last 32 years of my life were full of struggle for me. I thank those who supported me, supported me. I also thank the people of Tamil Nadu and all the lawyers for having faith in me.

The Supreme Court on Friday ordered the release of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi assassination convicts Nalini Sriharan, Robert Paes, Ravichandran, Raja, Sriharan and Jayakumar. A bench of Justice BR Gavai and Justice BV Nagarathna had passed a direction related to this on May 17. After that the order was passed on Friday. Perarivalan, another convict in the case, had already been given relief. The bench said that Perarivalan’s order is applicable to the present applicants. Perarivalan had spent thirty years in jail.

Tamil Nadu government had recommended the release
The Tamil Nadu government had recommended the release of all the convicts in the Rajiv assassination case. The Supreme Court said that the Governor has not acted on the recommendation of the Tamil Nadu government. The bench also said that the convicts have spent more than three decades in jail. His conduct in prison was satisfactory. Rajiv Gandhi assassination convict S Nalini had demanded premature release. He had approached the Supreme Court in August.

Rajiv Gandhi was killed in an election rally
He challenged the order of the Madras High Court, in which his plea for early release was dismissed. It is noteworthy that a suicide bomber killed former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on 21 May 1991 in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. At that time Rajiv Gandhi was doing an election rally. The woman’s name was said to be Dhanu.
