J&K (J&K) administration has planned to develop this part as Smart City. Under this, for the first time, under Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode, a total of 8 such zones including Lal Chowk of Srinagar have been identified which are planned to be made free Wi-Fi zones.

It is said in the documents that the use of WiFi will act as a magnet at these places. It has also been clarified in the documents that users will be provided with high speed internet access for the first 15 minutes. After this, users will be given the option to continue internet access by purchasing data for an additional period of time.

According to the documents, it is also being considered so that more and more citizens can be connected with e-government services and it should be expedited. This will lead to less time on operating expenses. It is said that Lal Chowk is a major business center where businessmen have been complaining about poor internet connectivity.
