Some of the members of the Legislative Council will also be among those taking the oath.
Mumbai. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde will expand his 40-day-old cabinet on August 9. The Chief Minister gave this information on Monday. Shiv Sena MLA Shinde and BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis were sworn in as the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister respectively on June 30. “The expansion of the cabinet is expected on August 9,” Shinde told reporters in Nanded in the Marathwada region. A close aide of Shinde told PTI that a dozen ministers will take oath at a ceremony scheduled at 11 am at the Raj Bhavan in south Mumbai. He said that the next round of expansion will happen later.
The chief minister’s aide said, “The monsoon session of the state legislature is to be held soon, so we decided to include 12 MLAs in the cabinet expansion.” Some Legislative Council members will also be among those who will take oath on Tuesday. Sources said that it will be a difficult task for Shinde, who has brought most of the MLAs into his camp by adopting a rebellious stance in the Shiv Sena. Shinde has visited Delhi seven times in the last one month and after each visit there has been speculation about cabinet expansion.
The names of Bharat Gogawale and Shambhuraj Desai are in discussion from Shinde faction. Party sources said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is likely to include state president Chandrakant Patil, Sudhir Mungantiwar, Girish Mahajan, Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, Suresh Khade and Atul Save. Shinde, however, said the names of those who took oath as ministers on Tuesday were being finalised. “These names will be finalized on Monday night or Tuesday (morning),” Shinde said. The Chief Minister visited New Delhi seven times in the last one month and with every visit, there was a discussion that the cabinet was about to expand.
Leader of Opposition in Maharashtra Assembly Ajit Pawar said Shinde had promised ministerial posts to every MLA who came with him. “Now Shinde is not able to fulfill his promise, hence the cabinet expansion is getting delayed,” Pawar said. The Chief Minister should also tell why the delay happened. Pawar also said that till now no invitation has come to him for the cabinet expansion to be held on Tuesday. He said that it is clear that all the 40 rebel Shiv Sena MLAs who went to the Shinde group will not get ministerial posts. A political observer said, “Maharashtra has had less delays than Telangana, where in 2019 Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao had waited for more than two months to constitute the full council of ministers.
