Face mask not mandatory during air travel: Aviation Ministry

New Delhi: The Ministry of Civil Aviation said on Wednesday that the use of masks during air travel is not mandatory. However, the ministry also said that passengers should use them on priority in view of the corona virus.

Till now the use of mask or face cover was mandatory while traveling in flight.

In a communication to scheduled airlines, the ministry said the latest decision has been taken in line with the government’s policy of a graded approach to COVID-19 management response, reported news agency PTI.

The communication said, “… henceforth in-flight announcements may only mention that in view of the threat posed by COVID-19, all passengers must use a mask/face cover.”

It also said that there is no need to announce any specific reference to fine/punitive action as part of the in-flight announcements.

India reported 501 new coronavirus infections in the last 24 hours, a day after witnessing the lowest decline of 474 cases since 6 April 2020, according to Health Ministry data.
