Hyderabad/Amravati: There has been continuous torrential rain in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh for the last two days. So far 10 people have died due to rain. At the same time, flood-like conditions have arisen at many places. Railway services have also been affected due to continuous rain. An official of South Central Railway said that due to heavy rains and waterlogging on the tracks at many places, 99 trains were canceled and four trains were partially canceled, while the route of 54 trains was changed.
PM Modi and Amit Shah talked
PM Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy. They also assured them of all possible help from the central government to deal with the rain and floods. Telangana Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy said that the timely precautionary measures taken have reduced the loss of life and property. He said that despite these measures, nine people lost their lives in different rain-related incidents in different parts of the state. Three people are also feared to have been washed away in Mahabubabad and Khammam districts. The minister said that in other districts like Suryapet, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Mahabubabad and Khammam, the officials have evacuated the residents of many flood-affected villages to safer places.
CM Revanth Reddy held a review meeting
Telangana CM A Revanth Reddy held an emergency review meeting. Hyderabad also received heavy rains and several parts of the city were waterlogged as the overnight downpour continued. All schools have been declared a holiday on September 2 due to the forecast of more heavy rains in Hyderabad district, officials said. District collectors have been asked to declare a holiday in educational institutions on September 2 as per local conditions. Residents of an area in Khammam district are stranded on rooftops as large areas are inundated. The weather department on Sunday predicted very heavy to extremely heavy rains at isolated places in Adilabad, Nizamabad, Rajanna Sircilla, Yadadri Bhuvangiri, Vikarabad, Sangareddy, Kamareddy and Mahbubnagar districts of Telangana till 8.30 am on September 2. A ‘red alert’ has been issued for this forecast.
So far 9 people have died in Andhra Pradesh
At the same time, rain is expected in many places in Andhra Pradesh and heavy rains may occur at some places. An official release said that heavy rains are expected in parts of Srikakulam, Vijayanagaram, Parvatipuram Manyam, Alluri Sitarama Raju, Kakinada and Nandyal districts. R. Kurmandha, Managing Director of Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority, while alerting the people living in low-lying areas, said that a first level warning has been issued at Prakasam Barrage in Vijayawada due to the Krishna river being in spate, due to which heavy water is flowing. So far, nine rain-related deaths have occurred in Andhra Pradesh and one person is missing. A day earlier, the death toll in the state was eight.
Vijayawada and Guntur cities submerged
At the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) in Tadepalli, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu said the state has received heavy rains. “Due to heavy rains, Vijayawada and Guntur cities are completely inundated. The Vijayawada-Guntur National Highway at Kaza and the Vijayawada-Hyderabad National Highway at Jaggaiyapeta are completely inundated,” Naidu said. According to the Chief Minister, Jaggaiyapeta received 26 cm rainfall in 24 hours, while 14 mandals recorded more than 20 cm rainfall. CM Naidu gave information about the situation
The CM said 94 other places in 14 districts received rainfall between seven and 12 cm. Nine people have been reported dead and one person missing in rain-related incidents, the CM said. According to the CM, floodwater which was supposed to be diverted to Kolleru lake was diverting towards Vijayawada and resulting in flooding in the city. “We are increasing security in the downstream areas of Prakasam barrage with sand bags and other means and have also alerted the District Collectors,” Naidu said about the steps being taken to deal with the rain problem. The CM said 17,000 people affected by the rains have been shifted to 107 relief camps, while over 1.1 lakh hectares of agriculture area and 7,360 hectares of horticulture area have been damaged. Naidu said food is being arranged for the people at the rehabilitation centres.
26 NDRF teams deployed
26 teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are being deployed for flood relief and rescue operations in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, officials said on Monday. They said 12 teams are already deployed in the two neighbouring states, while 14 more teams are being sent. Officials said eight of the 14 teams are being airlifted from various locations across the country. They said the NDRF teams are equipped with various equipment. (Input- Agency)
